Method development to calculate composite fatigue life

We developed an iterative method, which combines acknowledged literature results with the possibilities of the finite element method.

Field of expertise:

Simulation

Application area:

Composite

The method includes:

  • load type dependent mean-stress correction (fiber direction and perpendicular tension / pressure and shear) using Haigh diagram,
  • prediction of the degradation of elastic material properties and strengths per cycle,
  • failure analysis per cycle based on degraded material properties using a 1st ply failure model (Puck),
  • compact software integrated into Ansys environment.

This was a subtask of a project funded by the National Research, Development and Innovation Fund (NKFIH), Project title: “Production of polymer products by a short cycle time, automatized production technology for automotive applications, with exceptional focus on the complexity and recyclability of the composite parts”; The application ID number: NVKP_16-1-2016-0046.
